Sam J. West

Software architect building intelligent systems at the intersection of AI, cloud platforms, and human-centered design.

Sam J. West — software architect and technical leader

30+ years building software that works at scale.

I'm a software architect and technical leader based in the Midwest with over three decades of experience designing systems that have to actually work — at enterprise scale, under real constraints, with real teams. My career has taken me from writing line-of-business applications in the early 1990s web through enterprise platform architecture, cloud migration, and now the rapidly shifting landscape of AI-native systems.

My focus has long been on the intersection of technical rigor and practical delivery: understanding that the best architecture is the one your team can build, maintain, and evolve confidently. I've led platform initiatives across healthcare, shipping, agriculture, financial services, and SaaS — each with its own legacy, its own constraints, and its own version of "we've always done it this way."

Lately I've been spending most of my intellectual energy on AI adoption in enterprise contexts — not the hype cycle version, but the hard questions: how do you integrate LLMs into workflows that have to be reliable, auditable, and understandable to the people using them? That's the problem I find genuinely interesting right now.

Where I do my best work.

Software Architecture

Designing scalable, maintainable systems — from greenfield platforms to the careful modernization of legacy estates that power real businesses.

AI & LLMs

Practical AI adoption: agentic workflows, retrieval-augmented generation, prompt engineering, and integrating language models into enterprise systems responsibly.

Power Platform

Low-code automation at enterprise scale — Power Automate, Power Apps, Copilot Studio, and the governance patterns that keep it from becoming a sprawling mess.

Cloud & Infrastructure

Azure-first architecture, serverless patterns, infrastructure as code, and secure-by-design cloud-native solutions that scale without surprises.

Technical Leadership

Mentoring engineers, shaping team culture, translating business strategy into technical roadmaps, and helping organizations make better architectural decisions.

Systems Integration

API design, event-driven architecture, and bridging the gap between enterprise legacy systems and modern platforms — without blowing up what already works.

Career highlights.

2016 – Present

Senior Architect & Technical Lead

Enterprise cloud platform design and Power Platform practice lead. Drove large-scale integration programs and cloud migration strategies across multiple business domains.

2010 – 2015

Solutions Architect

Designed and delivered cloud-native and hybrid solutions on Azure. Led API strategy, developer platform work, and the first wave of enterprise cloud adoption at scale.

1995 – 2010

Software Engineer → Lead Developer

Built and led development of line-of-business applications across healthcare and financial services. First exposure to the challenges of scale, legacy, and organizational complexity.

What I'm thinking about now.

  • Agentic AI systems and multi-agent orchestration

How autonomous agents reason, plan, and collaborate — and what it takes to make them reliable enough to trust with real work.

  • The intersection of low-code and AI in enterprise workflows

Power Platform + Copilot is collapsing the distance between business users and AI capability. The governance and architecture implications are significant.

  • AI observability and system trustworthiness

How do you build confidence in AI-augmented systems? Logging, evals, human-in-the-loop design, and the organizational practices that make it sustainable.

Let's stay in touch.

I'm always open to interesting conversations about architecture, AI, or whatever you're building. If something here resonates, reach out.
